Description

The dodo is one of the first animals players encounter in survival mode. They’re small, herbivorous birds that spawn in most biomes. Spawn groups range from 1 to 4, with pairs being the most common in grasslands. Other biomes? Still unclear—dodos do whatever they want.

Appearance

Dodos are flightless pigeons. They’re medium-sized birds with oversized yellow, hook-shaped beaks tipped red. Their bodies are covered in white feathers that darken toward the lower half. Two small wings flap constantly in every animation like they forgot how gravity works. The tail is short and chicken-like. Legs are stubby, white, with duck-like feet. Majestic? Not really. Recognizable? Definitely.

Behavior

Dodos are passive animals that wander almost anywhere. Common in grasslands and forests, they behave like classic “low IQ mobs.” When attacked, they flee in circles for exactly 5 seconds (and no, it doesn’t stack if you keep hitting them).

They are the natural prey of foxes , which will attack them on sight.

Sound design? Two goofy noises that sound like a duck mashed with… some other bird. When damaged, they quack-ish. When sleeping, they reuse the generic “sleep noise” other mobs have.

Dodos notice players within 6 blocks and will follow anyone holding Grass Feed or the legacy chicken/dodo feed (no longer obtainable). Unlike their tiny cousins (Little Dodos ), modern dodos no longer care about rice

Fun fact: when falling, dodos flap to slow descent by 50%, but they still take half the fall damage. Nature gave them half a parachute.

Breeding

In current versions, dodos only eat Grass Feed , either fed directly or placed in a feed trough . Once fed, they emit heart particles and enter “ready-to-mate” mode.

When two dodos in this state meet, a nest icon appears above them. One lays 1–3 eggs in a Nest , which can hatch naturally or be looted as Dodo Eggs . (They also passively produce eggs outside breeding, because apparently extinction wasn’t working out for them.)

After breeding, they need a 5-minute cooldown before going again.

Habitat & Spawn Rate

Biome Spawn rate Frequency
Grassland 37.5% +6
Forest 33.33% +4

Utility

Dodos are the most common and easiest farm animals to raise. They reproduce fast, making them perfect for leather and meat farms. Their meat fuels many recipes, with the most infamous being the Roast Dodo Family Bucket . Eat it for a temporary speed boost or use it to tame a raptor
